The top 10 best dance songs
"Get lost on the floor and dance like there's no tomorrow," Paula Abdul tantalized during her 2008 comeback single. The track was pure disco paradise and Abdul was onto something: the return of dance music to mainstream pop. Dance music is back and it is firmly here to stay. With so many artists, old and new, dipping into nightclub culture, some great music has churned out lately. However, what are the 10 best dance songs of all time? Here is our list! Share your comments below.
10. "'Til the World Ends" - Britney Spears
After the lackluster "Hold It Against Me," Britney Spears wowed fans in 2011 with the euphoric and pounding "'Till the World Ends." Penned by pop party girl Ke$ ha, "World" is the perfect soundtrack to any nasty, grimy rave.
9. "Control" - Janet Jackson
This song, on Jackson's 1986 album of the same name, was groundbreaking for its time. Jackson is one of the first female artists to incorporate so much hip-hop and funk into mainstream dance music. With classic '80s kettle drums and Jackson's wispy voice, "Control" will make you lose control.
8. "I Feel Love" - Donna Summer
Donna Summer, who we lost in late 2012, is without a doubt a game-changer for dance music. Her emergence onto the disco scene in the '70s brought a breath of fresh air to the "Saturday Night Fever" fever. Summer brought a refreshingly new progressive sound, shown poignantly in "I Feel Love."
7. "Believe" - Cher
Perhaps Cher's signature song, "Believe," has become an omnipresent power anthem across generations. The song won Cher a Grammy in 1999, and its impressive use of Auto-Tune helped usher in a futuristic sound pervasive in modern dance music.
6. "Dance in the Dark" - Lady GaGa
Only one of two relatively newcomers on our list, GaGa's "Dance in the Dark" does the opposite of what we are praising her idols for doing. While Summer and Cher helped usher dance music into the future, GaGa took us back. With this song from 2009's The Fame Monster, GaGa throws in booming and industrial '80s synths to create a danceable, palpable tension. "Baby loves to dance in the dark, 'cause when he's looking she falls apart," GaGa sings. The track also is beautifully written.
5. "Can't Get You Out of My Head" - Kylie Minogue
Minogue is also an '80s music veteran; however, one of her best tracks came out in the early 2000s. With "Can't Get You Out of My Head," Minogue produced a stomping, thumping, and cloud-like dance utopia.
4. "Dancing Queen" - ABBA
Young and sweet, only 17. ABBA is dance music.
3. "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" - Whitney Houston
One of Whitney's classics, "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" ushered the vocal powerhouse into the '80s dance era. However, this does not come at the cost of Houston's incredible voice. She took home a Grammy for this one too.
2. "Into the Groove" - Madonna
The Queen of Pop has so many amazing dance tracks to choose from; however, we decided to go with "Into the Groove" from Madonna's 1984 album Like a Virgin. With uncomplicated lyrics and a gritty sound, "Into the Grove" does exactly what a dance song should do -- make you dance.
1. "Thriller" - Michael Jackson
With "Thriller" in 1982, Michael Jackson started a movement. Jackson's incredible choreography in his music video mixed with the brilliant sonics of this song made for the most important dance song (no wait, revolution) in history.
