Obama Flubs Sci-Fi Reference, Mixes Star Wars and Star Trek

The force is not strong with President Obama. During a press conference on Friday, he caused a disturbance in the sci-fi community when he said he couldn’t control the GOP’s actions leading up to the sequester. Here’s MSNBC.
“The fact they don’t take it means I should somehow do a Jedi mind meld with these folks and convince them to do what’s right.”
Business Insider explained why this was a huge geek fail for the President.
“A ‘mind meld’ is actually a Star Trek reference — it's a technique that includes sharing thoughts, experiences, memories, and knowledge with another individual. What Obama was looking for, of course, was a Jedi ‘mind trick.’”
Politico breaks it down with a Star Wars character using a Jedi mind trick in the video above. On the bottom, the famous Dr. Spock mind melds with a shrieking woman.
The President’s mistake caused a huge Twitter storm among sci-fi fans.

Another tweeter went as far as saying Obama was dividing the country by putting Star Wars and Star Trek geeks against each other.
@RalsonReports “So now Obama is putting Star Wars geeks vs. Star Trek geeks with his "Jedi mind meld" comment? When will he stop dividing this country?”
Tech Crunch points out he wasn’t too far off but it was poorly phrased. There is a Jedi Mind Meld reference in later Star Wars books.
Wikia explains it’s called Force meld but is the same technique used to share thoughts through the mind.
