Carrie Fisher -- OK, let’s call her like she is -- Princess Leia, said she would return to her throne and play the iconic character in J.J. Abrams’ and Disney’s new ‘Star Wars’ film.
Fisher told the Palm Beach Illustrated in an interview she will play the princess in the next film, and had a pretty comedic response for what Leia looks and acts like today.
“She’s in an intergalactic old folks’ home. ... just like she was before, only slower and less inclined to be up for the big battle. ... [she’s still wearing] The bagel buns and the bikini, because probably she has sundowners syndrome. At sundown, she thinks that she’s 20-something.”
Leia’s boys may be coming back as well. Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford are in talks with George Lucas and the writer Michael Arndt. The Daily Mail reports if any of the original cast decide not to partake in the next film, don’t expect a fill-in actor.
“He did say that if we didn't want to do it, they wouldn't cast another actor in our parts - they would write us out.”
So if all three stars decide to return, and it seems likely as this point, how will Michael Arndt write them all in? A writer for Cinema Blend expects the next film to be about Han’s, Luke’s and Leia’s children.
“...Star Wars has always had an affinity for stories about parents and their children, from Luke and Vader to Boba and Jango Fett, so a story about the main three's children would be pretty much in line with everything that came before, though maybe a little too expected.”
But Wired would like a few more women written into the new Star Wars films, arguing Princess Leia is the only significant female character in previous Star Wars films, and wants...
“A world where the other half of the human race is not only visible to movie-goers of all genders and ages, but equally capable of astonishing and inspiring feats of heroism.”
Disney and Lucasfilm are expected to release the next film in 2015.
