Basketball legend Michael Jordan finds himself in yet another paternity suit. This one dating back to 1995.
The woman behind the lawsuit, Pamela Smith, alleges Jordan is the father of her 16-year-old son Grant Reynolds, who goes by Taj. Reynolds even posted a video on YouTube back in December saying he is Michael Jordan’s son. The video has now gone viral as a result of the lawsuit.
Smith insists Jordan is the father, but court documents do not detail any intimate relationship between her and Jordan. TMZ explains exactly what she wants from MJ.
“His mom, Pamela Smith, filed legal documents saying that he is Michael Jordan’s son.”
“And she wants child support. Back-child support.”
Money is not the only thing Jones is after. The Chicagoist reports she wants her son to further prove his alleged relation to the basketball great by changing his last name to “Jordan.”
According to WXIA, Taj was not born in the U.S. It’s unclear why Smith waited so long to file the lawsuit but it is apparently she’s had some financial struggles.
“According to a bankruptcy filing in 2008, Smith had been a flight attendant for 22 years with American Airlines. Her son, Taj, lists on ReverbNation’s website for hip-hop artists that he was Jamaican born, Atlanta raised.”
This most recent paternity suit isn’t the first Michael Jordan has been involved in.
Back in 1991, he took a paternity test to dispel another suit. The results came back negative. Sources report might may have to do the same thing this time around.
“The suit requests Michael Jordan takes a paternity test.”
“Jordan’s publicist says he has no comment.”
For those who think Taj could be related to Jordan, another question comes to mind: How will this lawsuit help build a relationship between the two? A blogger for The Stir argues it won’t, and that the lawsuit -- which Taj allegedly begged for -- is just too little, too late.
“If Jordan is this child’s father, then of course, he owes him money. But 16 years later? What kind of relationship can they have?”
The lawsuit comes at a busy time in Jordan’s life. “His airness” turned 50 in February and is set to get married April 27th. Radar Online reports the paternity suit will not cause any disruption in his wedding plans.
A court date is set for March 12th.
