Few critics in the media are expecting any surprises at the Oscars this year, with "The Descendants" and "The Artist" the favorites for both Best Picture and Best Actor.
New York Times film critic A.O. Scott tells CBS News who he fancies for the Best Actor gong this year.
"Yeah I think it's Clooney's year. I think 'The Descendants' is the role for him to win this award."
Channel 3000 writer Scott Breedy went a step further and touted "The Descendants" for Best Motion Picture on the shoulders of Clooney's performance.
"The movie that I think should win this year's Oscar for Best Picture is -- drum roll please -- 'The Descendants.' George Clooney was terrific. He was emotional, charming, funny and as dashing of a guy as he is, in this film he was kind of dorky."
But ITN thinks silent movie "The Artist" will steal the show.
"First off we think 'The Artist' got Best Motion Picture in the bag. The black and white French movie set in 1920's Hollywood, the same city we expect it to be crowned an Oscar winner."
MTV agrees, saying the silent film is going to "win big".
"Only one question remains: How many statuettes will it take home? Its star Jean Dujardin is poised to take Best Actor and Michel Hazanavicius should take Best Director, since that award tends to precede Best Picture. But the film has many nominations in technical categories that are still undecided."
Also in with a shout for Best Picture are "The Help" and "Moneyball." Seattle Post Intelligencer reckons this year will be neck-and-neck for the Best Actress award, between Viola Davis for "The Help" and Meryl Streep's "Iron Lady."
"For a while it seemed certain Meryl Streep would end her 29-year losing streak with Iron Lady, but the support for Viola Davis and The Help has grown massive. Plus, Davis gives killer speeches, and don't think voters aren't swayed by that. Sandra Bullock, anyone?"
