Lucy Liu is set to star as Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick in the remake of TV show Elementary

The 43-year-old actress will star as the female Dr Watson alongside Jonny Lee Millers' Holmes in the new TV series Elementary.

And the gender swap isn't the only shock to the show which will be set in modern day New York, rather than London, leaving Scotland Yard for NYPD.

Sherlock is just out of rehab, where he's been treated for drug addiction, and is living in Brooklyn with his sober sidekick.

Lucy's character Joan Watson - a former surgeon who lost her license after a patient died - has her own demons to battle while helping the brilliant detective.

Holmes ... Jonny Lee Miller is taking on the role of Sherlock

The actress first found fame in the 90s in Ally McBeal and has most recently kept busy with voiceover work the Kung Fu Panda films and fighting the law on the small screen in gritty cop show Southland.
