New DWTS Cast Announced, But is the Show in Trouble?

ABC’s ‘Dancing With The Stars’ announced season 14’s cast on Good Morning America Monday.
As usual, there are are some athletes, like Green Bay wide receiver Donald Driver, who already has experience getting his groove on ...
And entertainment world celebs -- including the “Empress of Soul” herself, Gladys Knight.
And Jaleel White -- aka Steve Urkel -- all grown up.
Some of the new contestants took to their Twitter accounts after the news.
Singer Gavin DeGraw is ‘excited’
Sherri Shephard sent out this picture of her and new partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy.
And Extra host Maria Menounos says … “I was so nervous on gma!all around I’m terrified yet excited …”
But in its 14th season, can the highly watched show compete with the new Monday night lineup? CNN reports ...
“‘Dancing’ once ruled the Monday night ratings roost, but with NBC starting to show muscle with ‘The Voice,’ the [show] is facing pressure to step it up for its 14th season, especially after critics took umbrage with the series' lack of star power in recent seasons.”
And The Houston Chronicle seems to think that problem remains, writing:
“Dancing With the Stars has revealed the new cast for its fourteenth season, and it’s the usual mix of, “Oh yeah, that guy!” and “Who’s that?””
Forbes says ..
“ … the line up this year shows that it’s getting harder and harder to cast these kinds of shows. There is not an endless well of B and C (and even D) list celebrities and the payoff for the winners doesn’t last very long.”
But DWTS Executive Producer Conrad Green tells USA Today he hopes likability, not necessarily celebrity, will help with ratings.
‘This season, we particularly wanted to go for a likable cast, people that you feel affectionate toward, ..’The core of our show is about finding people you can root for and wanting them to triumph.’
And at least one cast member has attracted Slate:
“Any chance to see famous dances … by ‘The Urkel’ is a chance we will definitely take.”
