Celebrities tee off for a cause

Hyderabad, Feb. 27: 

Celebrities, top golfers and noted personalities will come together to play golf and raise funds for a good cause-fighting cancer, in Hyderabad during March 3 and 4.

The Cancer Crusaders Invitation Cup-2012 is being supported by a clutch of hospitals and corporates, which include Apollo Cancer Hospital, KIMS, Boulder Hills Golf & Country Club, Hyderabad; Novotel Hyderabad Convention Centre, Volvo Motors, HSBC Bank; Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd Pragati Offset Printers etc.

This was announced at a press conference today by Dr P. Vijay Anand Reddy, founder CURE Foundation and film star Akkineni Nagarjuna, a golfer and foundation supporter today.

Around 150 golfers are expected to participate in the tournament. On March 3, Sowmya, a twenty-year old-cancer patient of bone sarcoma will flag off the tournament.

Some of the noted personalities to take part initially in the Celebrities Play off include the State Minister, Ms D.K. Aruna, the US Consul General (Hyderabad), Ms Katherine Dhanani, Ms Tejdeep Kaur Menon (Police), Ms Smitha Sabharwal (IAS), Ms Shobana Kamineni (Apollo), fitness trainer, Ms Dinaz Vetvatwala etc.

The first edition in March 2010 attracted former Indian cricket skipper Kapil Dev, Sania Mirza; Pullela Gopichand; cine actresses Richa Gangopadhyay, Priyamani etc.

Dr Vijay Anand said, "Through this event, we intend to raise money and spread cancer awareness in the society. Our objective is to create a consistent, annual, respectable charity golf tournament that will be well known in the golfer community."

CURE Foundation started in 2003 has helped more than 800 patients till date to get treatment. He said around 9 lakh new cases of cancer were detected in India in 2010 and around 14 lakh new cases in 2011.
