It is not always plain sailing to teach a new skill to a supermodel.

But as a Cambridge University graduate Lily Cole is an exception to the stereotype, and proved to be a quick learner in the Caribbean on New Year's Eve.

She had learned a lesson in more ways than one, as she had sensibly covered her curves in a one-piece, perfectly suited to the energetic activity.

It came after the Torquay-born favourite suffered a near disaster on Sunday after donning a particularly skimpy two-piece.

Instead the Vogue cover girl wore a far more demure green one-piece costume, though it still showed enough of her famous physique to keep her cadre of fans satisfied.

The 25-year-old looked like a pro as she sailed on the blue St Barts surf on her board.

She seemed to have found her beach resort's answer to Yoda, as a bearded old man was spotted passing along his hard earned wisdom, no doubt gleaned from years of experience.

Initially Lily was given coaching while still on dry land, leaping on her board to paddle her way through imaginary waves.

And when her instructor decided the time was ripe, the determined Snow White And The Huntsman star waded her way into the waters to put her skills to the test.

And what a sight it was, for the lithe redhead proved to be something of a natural, gliding across the water with ease.

And her rotund guru was definitely pleased with her progress, and was seen passing along a critique as they returned to the sand together.

Lily been single since splitting from her long term lover Enrique Murciano last year.

But it seems she could potentially be ending 2012 with a new man on her arm.

For the professional clotheshorse was spotted massaging the back of Twitter founder Jack Dorsey as they holidayed together.
