They had sparked engagement rumours after she was spotted wearing a huge diamond ring on her left hand.

But now Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy have denied the reports, insisting they are not yet set to wed.

The speculation first began when 22-year-old tennis player was seen flashing the diamond and sapphire jewel as she arrived at Brisbane International Airport with her golfer beau on Friday.

However, a spokesperson for Danish sportswoman Caroline denied the rumours, telling MailOnline: 'This is not true.'

That looks familiar: Caroline's ring is similar in style to the Duchess of Cambridge's

Caroline looked chic but casual in her bright blue outfit as she headed back to her hotel from the airport, while Rory, 23, opted for a pair of checked shorts and a white and pink printed T-shirt.

But all eyes were undoubtedly on Caroline's new accessory - a square-cut jewel, which bore a strong similarity to the Duchess of Cambridge's engagement ring from Prince William with its sapphire centre and diamond surround.

The sportswoman wore the ring alongside another matching diamond and sapphire band.

However, it's also tradition for Danish women to wear their engagement and wedding rings on the right hands, indicating that perhaps the jewel may have just been a recent Christmas present.

Later that day, the pair were seen heading to the Queensland Tennis Centre where Caroline removed her rings before fitting in some practice ahead of the Brisbane International tennis tournament.

Northern Irish golfer McIlroy was seen proudly watching his rumoured fiancée as she showed off her skills on the court.

Caroline said of the No. 1-ranked McIlroy at the airport upon arrival: 'He leaves me alone to just let me do my thing.'

But McIlroy also spoke about Caroline in a recent interview, crediting his girlfriend's work ethic for helping him get a new perspective on his career.

He said: 'Seeing how hard she works and how hard she practices and how dedicated she is, it definitely flipped a switch with me that I could be a little more like that.

'She's definitely been a great influence on me.'

The Brisbane International begins Sunday with Caroline's first match in a tournament that includes Serena Willliams and Maria Sharapova, if fit.

Speaking ahead of her primary match, Caroline said: 'It's a new year and all I want to do is my best and we'll see what happens. Obviously I want to go far here and to do that I have to play against the best.

'I've never been to Brisbane so I want to start off well and this field gives the perfect preparation.'

In November, Caroline was forced to deny rumours she and Rory were engaged after Serena Williams' hitting partner Sascha Bajin played a prank on the sportswoman by congratulating her on the couple's happy news.

Caroline then tweeted in reply: 'Can't believe you started rumors like that! @BigSascha .. Not engaged yet, but you'll be the first to know if we do!;) hehe.'
