She’s been dead for more than 50 years – but Marilyn Monroe is still making headlines.

The FBI has just released its secret files on the blonde sex symbol that reveal it suspected her of being a Communist.

According to CBS News, the new information makes public just how closely the FBI monitored Monroe – who was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

“They reveal some of her friends were suspected Communists and she once considered traveling to the Soviet Union. The FBI kept files on her from 1955 until her death in 1962.”

Fox News reports on an anonymous tip the FBI received in 1956 about Monroe and her then-husband, playwright Arthur Miller. According to the tipster:

"Arthur Miller had been and still was a member of the communist party and was their cultural front man and that his wife, Marilyn Monroe, had also drifted into the Communist orbit."

Jezebel’s Madeleine Davies notes that the documents the FBI released aren’t really new – it’s just that the redacted sections have been restored. In any case, Davies writes:

“Marilyn Monroe had some progressive, albeit short-sighted views on politics and equality. Let the broad rest in peace.”
