We Are Young stars pop in for a bit of fun. in the Biz Sessions
WE Are Young hitmakers fun. have revealed a tasty secret – they almost called themselves Ice Cream.
The American trio – Nate Ruess, Jack Antonoff and Andrew Dost – popped in for Biz session and unearthed a list of alternative names from their early days in 2008.
Guitarist Jack said: "We chose fun out of the blue but we considered Ice Cream. I've got a list on my phone of possible band names, and this is where it came from – Ice Cream and fun are right next to each other, so that's why it got picked.
"Mermaid was on there, and iBand, which is a bad name. Bunny was another one."
Andrew displayed a surprising knowledge of Scottish post-punk music, adding: "I really wish we'd used Ice Cream, because Orange Juice is like the sickest name for a band ever."
But lead singer Nate chipped in: "We went with the name fun because Ice Cream didn't work – although Andrew thinks it did – but when you think of fun, you think of ice cream."
The three guys popped in to play their massive hit We Are Young and new single Some Nights.
US band play the anthem that smashed the charts on both sides of the Atlantic
And they also laid down a moving version of the Lady Antebellum song We Owned The Night.
Fun. formed in 2008 after Nate left his former band, The Format, and asked Andrew and Jack to join him.
They were recording within a week and released their first album, Aim and Ignite, in 2009.
After a spell in the studio, the band released we are Young in September last year but it failed to dent the top 50 in the US charts.
But the single was handed two huge boosts when it was covered by the cast of Glee and later used in a Chevrolet ad during the Superbowl in February.
The song leapt to the top spot on the US charts where it stayed for six weeks, and also became the first single to log seven weeks of 300,000 or more in digital sales.
TRIO unveil an acoustic version of their new single in the Sun studio
It topped the UK charts in May and has sold over 800,000 copies here.
Nate says he always thought the track had legs, but didn't expect the runaway success that it has become.
He said: "We had high expectations for it as a single. Coming from the last album we thought there would be a nice boost, because we signed to a bigger record label and we progressed as a band.
"Everything was ready to get bigger but we never thought it would do this."
And he couldn't be more delighted that it featured on musical TV series Glee.
He added: "Glee gives a voice to a lot of bands who aren't spoken for in the mass media and we also love musical theatre. There are a lot of things we love about Glee so we were proud to be part of it.
THE lads cover the hit ballad originally recorded by Lady Antebellum
The lads had a message for the public knockers of the hit show.
Jack chipped in: "A lot of bands make say publicly that they don't like Glee which we think is silly.
"People have been outspoken about not doing Glee and that's a strange reaction. We don't understand why you would talk about something you're not doing."
Behind the scenes the trio are as close as they appear on stage – and Nate is even dating Jack's sister Rachel.
And Nate jokes that his bandmate had nothing to worry about when they got together.
He said: "I knew Jack first. I've known Jack forever, for about ten years. We've all known each other for a long time before we played together.
"Besides, I'm a great guy!"
The banter flies back and forth between the three friends, and they clearly enjoy each other's company.
But when it comes to their idea of a fun. day out, it's not very rock n'roll.
Nate says: "All of us have a slight difference in our fun day but there's always got to be some sort of activity, like working out or playing basketball.
"Andrew might do his lawn! He's the proud owner of a lawnmower."
The new single Some Nights is released on August 27. The album of the same name is out now.
