Mariah Carey angry after American Idol try to sign Nicki Minaj

THE ego-fuelled game of musical chairs is underway as American Idol bosses plot their new judging panel which involves huge heads and even larger bottoms.

Pop superstar Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler both quit the show last month and record producer Randy Jackson — who has been on the show since it launched a decade ago — could follow.

That means there could be three or even four new judges on the talent show panel when it returns to screens in the US — and ITV2 in the UK — early next year.

Such a huge revamp was always going to be tricky for show chiefs.

And they made it even harder for themselves by deciding to hire pop diva Mariah Carey for the new-look judging line-up.

They then swooped for hip-hop star Nicki Minaj to sit her huge behind alongside Mariah's not inconsiderable rear on the panel — and all hell broke loose.

A source revealed: "Mariah is not happy about the idea of Nicki being on the show.

"She wanted to be the only woman on the panel. And she certainly doesn't want to work with a woman who is younger than her and could try and upstage her."

The negotiations with potential male judges are looking almost as complicated as show bosses try to find the right formula.

Kanye West and P Diddy have both had calls and neither have ruled it out — if the money is right.

Country stars Brad Paisley and Keith Urban are being considered to ensure the show pleases its core viewers in middle America.

Aussie crooner Urban — who was a judge on the Australian version of The Voice earlier this year — is thought to be closest to signing on.

He is said to be keen to take advantage of the telly gig to cut down on his touring and spend more time with wife Nicole Kidman and their two young daughters.

Elton John and Katy Perry were both approached too but turned it down.

The show is in a tough three-way fight now with The Voice and The X Factor to cling on to its title of America's biggest talent show. Unlike what happened in the UK, The Voice got its panel right first time in the US with the bromance between Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine and country icon Blake Shelton making entertaining viewing.

And Simon Cowell's X Factor will have pop superstar Britney Spears on their panel when they return for their second series next month.

But you can guarantee Mariah, Nicki, Kanye and Diddy will not all be sitting behind the judging table when American Idol hits screens early next year.

It would be far too expensive for show bosses and too urban for middle America.

And there would be no space for all those big heads — and Nicki's rear.
