The numbers are in: TLC’s breakout hit “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” beat the Republican National Convention in the ratings, and members of the media can’t decide whether they should be stunned or sad.

“More people watched the controversial TLC show than the Republican National Convention.”
“That’s just sad.”
“God Bless America.”

The Hollywood Reporter has the numbers.

“The fourth episode of Honey Boo Boo pulled in just shy of 3 million viewers at 10 p.m., according to Nielsen overnight ratings, growing 30 percent from last week's 2.3 million haul.”

That three million was enough to completely eclipse other programming Wednesday evening, including convention coverage on both cable and broadcast news.

According to TV Newser, every network’s ratings of night two of the Republican National Convention decreased substantially in comparison to the same night four years ago when Sarah Palin made her RNC debut.

But what does this tell us about what Americans prefer this election? According to a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle...

“What that tells me is either that ‘Honey Boo Boo’ is heavily favored by Democratic viewers, or that Republicans are more interested in watching a pudgy child make her stomach folds ‘talk’ than listening to vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan discuss why the GOP team is a better choice than Obama.”

June Shannon, Honey Boo Boo’s mother, thinks it’s their relatability that keep people watching, telling Us Weekly -

“Our fan base tells us that when they have a bad day they can be able to watch our show and be able to get a good laugh; ... It's just all about having fun making memories."

As for the Democratic National Convention next week, guess we’ll see if the Toddlers and Tiaras spinoff will continue its ratings winning streak.
