Well, this is some pretty solid news. And, we’re sure all you real gamers are rolling your eyes at that pun. But, a ‘Metal Gear Solid’ movie has been announced after years of rumors. The announcement came at the game’s 25th anniversary presentation in Tokyo.

Reports are that Columbia Pictures has picked up the film, and are naming well-known producer Avi Arad as attached to the project. Arad has served as the CEO of Marvel Studios …

And has produced for every comic book series turned into a movie under the sun, from X-Men to Spiderman, Blade, the Hulk, Iron Man and more.

The ‘Metal Gear’ games have long been noted for their cinematic qualities, including a complicated plot of espionage. Plus, series creator Hideo Kojima loves movies.

So much so that, Kotaku reports at the presentation he was  already naming actors and directors he likes, including Matt Damon, Hugh Jackman and Chris Nolan. Real shocker on that last one.

As for producer Arad, The Guardian reports he said video games are the new comic books, and The Guardian says — that makes good business sense.

“Hollywood has made many many millions over the past five years by taking comic books seriously – and now that it is running out of major superhero characters to bring to screen, it may well turn its gaze to video game brands.”

But there have been attempts to bring the game to the big screen in the past, and they’ve failed.

‘Metal Gear Solid’ has been trending on Twitter since the presentation --

But some of the Tweets reflect skepticism that even this announcement will yield an actual film.

Still, Escapist Magazine reports the movie announcement wasn’t the only big news from the conference -- a new Metal Gear game is in the works too.
