United Nations Security Council ... or United Nations Space Command?

The BBC mistakenly used a fictitious military logo from Microsoft and Bungie’s popular video game series, Halo, to reference the U.N. Security Council.

Halo enthusiasts were quick to point out the error to the BBC, and in a statement to Eurogamer a BBC spokesperson said...

BBC News makes every effort to ensure the accuracy of all images broadcast, however very occasionally mistakes do happen. ... [W]e apologise to viewers for the mistake.”

The Telegraph suggests the incident was probably the result of a poorly-conducted Google image search.

“...as a simple search for UNSC only returns images from Halo.”

Searching “UNSC” on Google returns dozens of pictures depicting futuristic combat between humans and aliens, but just a few “UNSC” logos. So how did the BBC make such a big mistake? The Irish Independent explains...

“...perhaps because the UN security council does not have a logo of its own, instead using the United Nations globe symbol surrounded by laurel leaves.”

But the BBC wasn’t the only one to mistakenly use the logo. The Guardian reports...

“The channel can at least ‘console’ itself with news that it is not alone. As discovered by tech site VentureBeat, the CanAsian Times has the same logo in its own story about the Security Council.”

The image was removed from later broadcasts.
