Top 10 Spoleto events to check out this week

It's week two of Spoleto, and we've already said sayonara to some of the most buzzed-about acts. It was great while it lasted, Jack Hitt, LEO, Ketch & Critter, and Alvin Ailey thanks for the memories. There's no time for nostalgia, though, as this week brings a slew of new shows and events. Here are our picks for the top 10 events to check out this week.

k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang Band
OK, so this show has "extreme limited availability" and it has for a while, but if you managed to snag some tickets, you can pat yourself on the back because you'll be seeing one of the hottest shows on this year's schedule.

Jake Shimabukuro
We were dazzled by this young ukulele sensation when he performed at the festival in 2009, and we're so excited about his return performance at the Cistern that we're throwing a Honoluau in his honor after Saturday night's show.

Joy Kills Sorrow
We love the fact that this rootsy string band is made up of a bunch of hipster-lookin' Boston kids. But we expect they can hold their own down South, too.

The Agony and the Ecstasy of Steve Jobs
Mike Daisey told a story about Apple's Chinese factories, and all hell broke loose when it was discovered that not everything he said was truthful. The debate over Daisey has made national headlines, and we're getting a rare chance to hear him speak out.

Orchestra Uncaged
Ever hear an orchestra perform works by a rock star? Well, that's what you'll get as the Spoleto Festival Orchestra, under the direction of Resident Conductor John Kennedy, takes on a duo of pieces by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood. Music in Time: Conversation with Philip Glass Composer Philip Glass turns 75 this year, and he'll sit down with John Kennedy to discuss his long history with Spoleto Festival and his newest opera, Kepler. He'll also play some songs on the piano.

Holy Land Experience
Comedian/storyteller Martin Dockery returns to Piccolo with his third one-man show. This one's about his faithless pilgrimage to the land of the faithful.

Dinner with the Elams
It's all in the family for this comedic quintet, which is made up of three siblings and two fiances. It's not as creepy as it sounds. And member Jet Eveleth is one of Chicago's most talented comediennes.

Salute to Miles Davis
Local jazz cats Kevin Hackler, Mark Sterbank, Simon Harding, Richard White, Ben Wells, and Ron Wiltrout join forces to play Miles Davis' album Kind of Blue in its entirety.

Piccolo Spoleto Intern Block Party
The Piccolo Spoleto interns work hard to help keep the festival running smoothly, and to celebrate their efforts, they throw a little block party every year. This one at Marion Square features music from Old You, Folkgrass, McKenzie Eddy, and Rustic Remedy, plus food vendors and games.
