Hank Williams III Scores Hot Shot Debut at No. 16 on Country Albums
Newcomer Kip Moore claims his first top 10 and Eric Church collects his fourth and fastest trip to the upper tier, completing his second set of two straight top 10's on Country Songs.
Moore's debut single "Somethin' 'Bout a Truck" rises 11-9 in its 29th chart week, marking the third time this year that a song has needed more than 25 weeks to reach the top 10. Martina McBride's "I'm Gonna Love You through It" entered the top 10 in its 26th week (January 28), and Montgomery Gentry's "Where I Come From" did so in its 35th week (March 24). However, the length of Moore's climb is on par with other recent instances where a rookie artist reaches the top 10 with their first charted single.
Since the beginning of 2011, Moore is the third newcomer to reach the top 10 with a debut single, following Brantley Gilbert's "Country Must Be Country Wide," which reached the upper tier in its 28th chart week last November, on its way to a No. 1 peak in December -- it reached the summit in its 33rd chart week. Sunny Sweeney's first charted title, "From a Table Away," peaked at No. 10 in its 39th week, and moved to recurrent status the following week. With approximately 516,000 downloads sold to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan, Moore's "Truck" ranks at No. 6 with 47,000 downloads in its 17th week on Country Digital Songs. It introduces his first album, "Up All Night," which arrived April 24. The album was produced by a-list songwriter/producer Brett James, who charted five of his own singles on Country Songs between 1995-03.
Meanwhile, Church's "Springsteen" shifts 12-10 in its 12th week on the audience-driven Country Songs -- the quickest of four top 10 singles so far, including his lone No. 1 achievement, "Drink in My Hand," which needed 16 weeks to reach the top 10 last December. That track topped the chart six weeks later (January 28). Church's first set of two top 10's was noted when "Love Your Love the Most" posted a No. 10 peak in its 32nd chart week in October 2009, followed by "Hell On the Heart," which peaked at No. 10 in its 31st chart week the following spring. "Springsteen" is the third-ranked title on Country Digital Songs, where it sells 77,000 downloads in its 10th chart week.
Up 23%, Church's current album "Chief" swipes Greatest Gainer honors with 19,000 copies in its 39th week on Country Albums.
Third-generation country rocker Hank Williams III takes the Hot Shot Debut at No. 16 on Country Albums with "Long Gone Daddy" (5,000 copies), a compilation of unreleased material recorded while the artist was under contract to Curb, a deal that reportedly ended at the close of 2010. Although Williams' relationship with the label was tempestuous to say the very least, it did yield three top 10 achievements on Country Albums: "Damn Right Rebel Proud" (No. 2, 2008); "Rebel Within" (No. 4, 2010); "Hillbilly Joker" (No. 10, 2011).
