Top 10 things in movies for week of April 29, 2012

Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins in 'The Hobbit,' 10 minutes of which were previewed in Las Vegas.

1. Cineplex strength. After a lousy 2011, box-office numbers have decisively turned around. (Thank Jennifer Lawrence and Channing Tatum.) Expect "The Avengers" to continue this lucrative trend.

2. Kevin Hart, superstar. Okay, maybe the "Think Like a Man" comedian hasn't attained mega-status yet. But with the movie's unexpected success, he's headed there.

3. The Tribeca Film Festival closes for another year. The fest winds down another successful run, with Saturday's "Avengers" gala.

4. A meeting of mavericks. With Jack White scoring and Johnny Depp starring, Gore Verbinski's "The Lone Ranger" may turn out to be the coolest movie ever made.

5. Cusack gets his due. Whether you think of him as Lane Meyer, Lloyd Dobler or Edgar Allan Poe, we all agree: John Cusack's new star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is well earned.

6. The Muppets return. Good news: a sequel to "The Muppets" is in the works. Great news: original filmmakers James Bobin and Nicholas Stoller are making it. (Lousy news: Jason Segel is sitting this one out.)

7. Do Something Reel Film Festival. Every month, this new online fest will feature a different, environmentally conscious movie. Right now, check out the inspirational NYC doc "The Apple Pushers." (dosomethingreel.com)

8. "The Little Fugitive." On Monday, BAM will screen this groundbreaking 1953 indie about a boy who runs away to Coney Island. It's one of the most magical childhood films ever made.

9. New York No Limits Festival. The Wild Project (195 E. Third St.) hosts a lineup of international and local shorts on Wednesday night. It's not often that one ticket will get you comedy, horror, documentary, sci-fi and psychodrama.

10. A hobbled "Hobbit." Audiences were surprisingly divided when Peter Jackson previewed "The Hobbit" in Las Vegas this week. (Then again, their concerns were based on only 10 minutes of footage.)
