The king of Rock ’n’ Roll … dethroned. Rap sensation Lil Wayne has now surpassed rock legend Elvis Presley to become the new King of the Billboard Hot 100. CNN has more.

“Lil Wayne now has 109 Hot 100 songs, beating Elvis Presley’s mark of 108 that began with the first Hot 100 chart back in 1958.”

News that Wayne would now be atop the record books broke Thursday evening — prompting thousands to take to twitter to congratulate him/question what is wrong with society.

One tweeter said … The moment we’ve all been waiting for: Lil Wayne passes Elvis (Elvis!) for most songs in the Billboard Top 100.”

But as one could anticipate, not everyone was quite as excited … “Lil Wayne just passed Elvis Presley on the all time top 100 billboard record. #Pathetic

The Elvis faithful aren’t just criticizing Lil’ Wayne’s music, they’re also criticizing the legitimacy of his new Billboard record. WHNS explains why.

“He’s only the lead singer in 42, so he’s on led 42 songs. 67 others are ones that he collaborated with other artists, so fair … I don’t know but he broke the record.”

Presley fans have also pointed out that songs such as “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Hound Dog” were released before the Hot 100 even existed. But Lil’ Wayne supporters aren’t taking the criticism sitting down.

A blogger for the UK’s SoulCulture says “ … it is testament to his achievement that 57 of the tracks which he has had his name on have made it into the Top 40. 17 of his tracks have made it into the top ten. He must be doing something right.”

Despite the back and forth between Wayne and Presley fans, Reuters notes both artists have a long way to go to catch up with the hit musical show “Glee” —  which has a total of 204 entries in the Hot 100 to date.
