On stage Madonna is no stranger to flashing the flesh and flaunting her figure.

But off stage the 54-year-old singer is a little more reserved and conservative when it comes to her style.

The Give It 2 Me singer was seen completely covered up in a bright purple tracksuit as she headed back to her hotel following a night out in New York.

Her dressed down ensemble consisted off the loose-fitting sportswear, a flat-peaked baseball cap, a grey scarf and a pair of flip flops, giving her a rather scruffy appearance.

Madonna was seen with her toyboy boyfriend Brahim Zaibat, 25, and her two youngest children Mercy, six, and David, seven.

Madonna's Brahim appeared to be a little camera shy and instead of wearing his beanie hat on his head he simply held it up to his face to hide under it.

David also seemed a little bashful and had a baseball cap pulled down over his face.

Mercy looked adorable with a cream headband in her hair, matching her top.

The little girl flashed a big smile as she followed her family home.

Madonna might well be trying to keep a low profile after she sparked controversy by calling President Barack Obama a 'black muslim' during a concert on Monday.

Yesterday the pop singer said she was being deliberately 'ironic on stage' when she made the comment.

A video clip posted on YouTube by audience members at the Verizon Center in downtown Washington captured the 54-year-old singer delivering a rousing, profanity-laced political speech about freedom during her show on Monday.

'Now, it's so amazing and incredible to think that we have an African-American in the White House ... we have a black Muslim in the White House ... it means there is hope in this country, and Obama is fighting for gay rights, so support the man.'

Obama, who is campaigning to be re-elected on November 6, is widely known to be a practicing Christian.

After her comments made headlines Madonna issued a statement saying her reference to Obama's religion was facetious.

'I was being ironic on stage. Yes, I know Obama is not a Muslim - though I know that plenty of people in this country think he is. And what if he were?'

'The point I was making is that a good man is a good man, no matter who he prays to. I don't care what religion Obama is - nor should anyone else in America.'
