X Factor 2011: Little Mix dream of being new Spice Girls
Last updated at 10:40 PM on 27th November 2011
Several groups have come close to taking the Spice Girls' crown, but no one has quite made it - until now that is.
Even All Saints, Sugababes and Girls Aloud never quite captured the girl power that Sporty, Scary, Baby, Ginger and Posh possessed.
But Little Mix are ready to reign in the world of girl power, crediting the feisty Wannabe quartet as their 'inspiration'.
Survivors: After taking part in the charity single performance, it was revealed Little Mix were safe and will return for the semi-final next week
Mel C, who is now a mother to two-year-old Scarlet, visited the X Factor contestants backstage to give them some advice and tell them they reminded her of when the Spice Girls first started.
Perrie Edwards, 18, told the Sunday Mirror: 'It was the best compliment ever, we couldn't believe it!'
Leigh-Anne Pinnock, 19, added: 'She told us the golden rule was to always remember each of us has a role in the group.
'Inspiring': Mel C and Emma Bunton have given Little Mix words of encouragement
'If one person stands out as the leader or the star, then that doesn't mean any of the other band members are less important.
'She said we were all vital to the band and Little Mix wouldn't be whole without all of us in the group.
'They are our inspiration as they were fresh and funky. They all had their own individual character and style, just like us. I'm the scary one with a bit of bite and attitude. Jesy's the sporty one, Perrie's the crazy one and Jade is like baby as she is sweet and girly.'
Could they win? Little Mix performed an incredible rendition of Christina Aguilera song Beautiful
Emma Bunton also showed her support for the rising stars by tweeting: 'Love Little Mix!!!'
On tonight's results show it was revealed that Perrie and Leigh-Anne, along with bandmates Jesy Nelson and Jade Thirlwall, had made it into the semi-final next week.
They will be joined by Amelia Lily, Marcus Collins and Misha B - who was saved from the bottom two against axed Janet Devlin.
Insecurities: Jesy Nelson has suffered Twitter abuse regarding her weight
Last night, they opened the show with a mash-up of Justin Bieber's Baby and The Supremes track Where Did Our Love Go, set against the backdrop of a fifties diner.
Things looked bleak when Louis Walsh said: 'I thought last week you were incredible, but this was a little lacklustre. You need to pull something more about the bag if you want to stay.
'A little bit of girl power! I want them in the final, I just think they can do better.'
Soulful: Jesy and Jade, along with Perrie and Leigh-Anne, put their emotions into their second song
However, it was during the second song that they won over the panel with their rendition of Christina Aguilera hit Beautiful.
Since starring on the show, Nelson, 20, has received a barrage of online hate from people making fun of her weight and comparing her to her slimmer bandmates.
But she seemed to conquer her insecurities, singing the lyrics: 'I am beautiful, no matter what they say. Words can't bring me down.'
Pass the tissues! The girls looked visibly moved after their performance
Jesy began to cry as she sang her final note, which set Kelly Rowland off with the waterworks.
The Destiny's Child star said: 'You have no idea how much I want to see you at the top of the charts. You are all so unique that when you come together it's so special.'
Gary Barlow credited the strength of their success on their relationship instead of the music, adding: 'You have friendship and it's a real key ingredient for a successful band.'
Breaking records: Little Mix are the only girl group to have made it into the top five on X Factor
