TOKYO, Nov 28 – Tom Cruise has set himself four missions during a 27-hour visit to Tokyo from December 1, including meeting fans of the Mission: Impossible franchise from disaster-hit regions of the north-east of the country.

Cruise had initially planned to start his swing through 11 nations to promote the release of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in Dubai, where much of the thrill-laden movie is set.

That plan was scrapped, however, as the star wanted to demonstrate his support for the hundreds of thousands of people affected by the magnitude-9 earthquake that struck the country on March 11, triggering the most destructive tsunami in living memory in Japan and crippling a nuclear plant in Fukushima Prefecture.

The four missions that Cruise will be undertaking during his brief stay in Japan – where he is immensely popular – will be a news conference to discuss the latest M:I movie, followed by a meeting with fans from the Tohoku region.

He will then attend the Japanese premiere of the movie and address the audience from the stage. His fourth and final mission remains something of a secret, but will involve an unannounced visit to a site somewhere in Japan.

Assured of a warm welcome whenever he arrives here, Cruise has in the past hired an entire 1,300-seat bullet train to take fans on a day-trip from Tokyo to Osaka. That stunt was a prelude to the opening of the third Mission: Impossible movie in Japan in 2006.

Cruise’s visit comes less than a month after another Hollywood A-list celebrity visit, when Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie visited in early November to mark the Japan premiere of Moneyball. During a press conference, Pitt said his thoughts went out to all the people who were trying to recover in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opens across Japan on December 16.
