Hip Hop superstar formerly known as Snoop Dogg is sending shockwaves through the record industry by changing his name to Snoop Lion and laying down his gangsta rap image for a more peaceful reggae persona. During a New York press conference Monday, the rap icon said he’d rediscovered himself during a trip to Jamaica:

Snoop Lion: “That ain’t no disrespect but I’m tired of rapping[Flash] ... I didn’t want to just come here and say I made a record in Jamaica and grew some dreadlocks. Rastafari called me.”

That clip was from a documentary trailer Snoop did about his transformation called ‘Reincarnated,’ which is also the title of his upcoming reggae album.

During Monday’s presser Snoop Lion also told reporters, “I have always said I was Bob Marley reincarnated,” referring to the legendary Jamaican reggae superstar.

Speaking to Rolling Stone’s Jeff Rosenthal, Snoop described his trip to Jamaica like Malcolm Xs pilgrimage to Mecca. But when Rosenthal asked if Snoop Dogg would be making a comeback, Snoop responded:

Snoop: “You act like I'm motherfuckin' Batman and Bruce Wayne and shit! ... I'm still the same person, dog!”

But not the same Dogg. There might be some haters out there. Upon hearing about Snoop’s name change, comedian and actor Zach Braff tweeted:

Braff: "People changing their name just to get press. So lame. Incidentally, my new name is Zach Lion Metta World Peace Dirty Money Cher"

But then there’s celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton who writes:

Perez: “We LOVE Snoop regardless of his surname!! Rapper or reggae artist. Gangster or lover. Blunt smoker or… Ha! Like that will ever change.”
