For a long time Peter Jackson said returning to Middle Earth wasn't a good idea. After The Hobbit became a reality it was turned into two films and now, the prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy will be a trilogy of its own. Connecticut's News12 explains.

“Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson announced this afternoon he’s adding a third film to the two part series The Hobbit. The first Hobbit film hits theaters in December.”

So how did the shortest tale of the classic series end up as three films? In a Facebook posting Peter Jackson says, if he didn’t take this chance, Bilbo Baggins’ full story might never be told.

“The richness of the story of The Hobbit ... allows us to tell the full story of the adventures of Bilbo Baggins and the part he played in the sometimes dangerous, but at all times exciting, history of Middle-earth.”

Jackson told reporters was mulling over the idea at this year’s Comic Con. io9’s Meredith Woerner says she’s conflicted about the announcement, but cautiously optimistic.

“... is there enough material for all these flicks ... Thats a whole heap of padding. Perhaps Anil Dash said it best: ‘Since when have diehard fans of a giant fantasy universe ever been disappointed by a bloated prequel trilogy?’"

But the hosts of The Electric Playground can’t get enough.

“I like it as two films, I like it as 3 or 4 films. There’s only so much Lord of the Rings to go around, there’s only so much Peter Jackson to go around.  I would  watch anything this guy directs. I know..."

"... they built all these sets already. Lets go back to these sets. Lets have more Golem, lets have more Bilbo.”

The title of the third film is unknown but Slash Film reports a few recent domain registrations may provide some clues.

“As for the title, domain registrations suggest The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: Riddles in the Dark as potential names. … This online activity isn’t exactly a confirmation of anything.”

The third film is slated for release summer 2014.
