A former member of the well known musical group, the Temptations, passed away Monday. Otis, better known as “Damon” Harris, lost his long battle against prostate cancer at the age of 62.
Auditioning a spot as tenor at the age of 21, Harris launched his career overnight as one of the youngest Temptations singers. But before he could take the stage, there was one caveat... Otis had to change his name. With the band’s founder Otis Williams calling the shots, there couldn’t be two band members with the same name.
As a young boy, Harris grew up admiring the Temptations. He and a few friends even formed a band called the Young Tempts that sang Temptations cover songs.
He would go on to win three grammy awards and help release several number one singles. According to MStarz, Temptations is considered one of the most successful bands in music history.
Harris battled cancer for 14 years. By the end of this last summer his condition had gotten much worse, leaving Harris in the hospital from November until last week, when he was transferred to hospice care.
But Harris’ cancer didn’t keep him down. According to the Baltimore Sun, he became an advocate for men getting regular prostate exams and was an activist for Stand Up to Cancer.
“He didn't want anyone to suffer the consequences that he suffered for not doing that.”
And it seems Harris’ music will live on, as many reflect on the life he had.
On Twitter, The Stone City Band Tweeted, “Damon Harris, Your spirit and voice live on in our hearts! ‘Poppa Was a Rolling Stone’ We Weep! Rest In Paradise....”
And The Examiner writes, “The Temptations singer died young but he did a lot of good things in his life. He will be greatly missed by family and friends and will always be remembered for his talents.”
Harris might best be remembered for his vocals in “Papa was a Rolling Stone.”
