Seth MacFarlane’s first outing as Oscar host was quite controversial, mostly because of the controversial jokes the star told throughout the night. Here are the highlights or, lowlights -- starting with some knocks about nominee ‘Django Unchained.’
SETH: "This is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who's been subjected to unthinkable violence. Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie. Oh, oh no. No, that’s what we were afraid he would do."
SETH: “A lot of controversy over the multiple uses of the N-word in the film. Um, I’m told apparently, the screenplay is loosely based on Mel Gibson’s voicemails. Is that? Is that?”
AUDIENCE HAS MIXED REACTION
SETH: “Lot of beautiful women. And for those of you who gave themselves the flu two weeks ago to get there, paid off. Lookin’ good.”
SETH: “I would argue, however, that the actor who really got inside Lincoln’s head was John Wilkes Booth. Oh, really? 150 years and it’s still too soon, huh?”
SETH: “I feel like we’re six months away from having to call him Benjamin Affleck ... First time I saw him with all that dark facial hair, I thought, my God! The Kardashians have finally made the jump to film.”
Yeah, a lot of shots at people who weren’t there to defend themselves. Not surprising, reviews of Seth’s hosting gig were not so favorable.
The Today Show called him “flat-footed.”
USA Today dubbed him “self-indulgent.”
Deadline summed up the show as “four hours of unfunny.”
And The San Jose Mercury asked, “Worst Oscar host ever?”
But Seth did have some fans out there -- Hollywood Life thought his racy jokes made him a great host.
And The Hollywood Reporter says you can’t please everyone -- but Seth more than exceeded expectations.
