Joan Rivers Slams Adele: Is She Ruining Her Legacy?

Comedienne Joan Rivers has always been silver-tongued, biting -- sometimes downright mean. So, what got her in the headlines this time? Apparently, a fat joke about a very beloved woman: Grammy and now Oscar-winning singer Adele.
(Rivers reaches her arms out to her sides, mocking Adele’s size)
AUDIENCE: laughter/“Oh!!”
JOAN: “No, she’s thin?? Can we just talk to each other here?”
“What’s her song, ‘Rolling in the Deep’? She should add ‘fried chicken.’ “
AUDIENCE: “Oh!”
RIVERS: “It is just...”
Well, SheKnows calls this flat-out bullying -- and says if an older woman is doing it, how do we expect our kids not to?
But really -- what’s the big deal? Rivers makes fun of her own appearance just as much -- and like we said, she’s been doing this for years. Idolator explains -- that’s the problem.
“ ... if you’re gonna do the fat joke in this day and age, you better do it in a novel way. ... If it’s go big or go home, she should’ve left those punchlines at home.”
CinemaBlend agrees, calling the joke “cheap and easy”...
And The LA Times writes...
“If only more 18-year-old boys were Joan Rivers fans, she’d be a shoo-in to host next year’s Oscars.”
Ouch. So, the message is -- step it up, Joan.
After all, the guy who was this year’s Oscars host, Seth MacFarlane -- has been criticized for his cheap shots too.
MACFARLANE: “This is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who’s been subjected to unthinkable violence -- or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie.”
(audience laughs, “oh”s)
MACFARLANE: “Oh.”
Incidentally -- MacFarlane has vowed never to host the Oscars again.
To Rivers’ credit, she’s managed to stay in the limelight for decades -- now, her career is becoming about the kind of legacy she’ll leave. And in today’s instantaneous media world...the 79-year-old is living dangerously. She slammed Adele about her Oscars night outfit, too -- via Twitter...
And back in the fall -- she made fun of the singer right after she gave birth.
As for Adele -- seemingly no response yet to Joan’s...um...jokes.
