Looks like Spice Girl fans will get what they want, what they really really want. Sky News reports the Spice Girls are back — well sort of.
“‘I’ll tell you what I want, what I really, really want. Don’t tell me what you want what you really, really want.” It’s been 16 years since the Spice Girls burst onto the scene claiming girl power was the future. And Tuesday they released details of their new musical.
It will be a live on-stage production. But the L.A. Times reports if you’re expecting to see something similar to the 1997 movie ‘Spice World,’ starring, yes, The Spice Girls, there’s something different in store.
Writers envision the Spice Girls music framing an “American Idol"-styled singing contest led by Viva. She’s a young woman with a chaotic home life who looks to resolve feelings about her adoption through belief in herself, female friendship and, well, "girl power."
The musical is called Viva Life and won’t actually include the Spice Girls. It was the idea of Judy Craymer who also produced Mama Mia. Channel 4 London has a quote from the Spice Girls about the musical’s storyline.
“It has been a big part of our culture for over a decade. And it really help to get the story and get into the story about fame and how it affects you and the people around you.”
The Spice Girls and everyone involved are excited for the launch of the musical and as US Weekly reports, Craymer says who else better to represent girl power than the Spice Girls?
"I loved what the Spice Girls did for women's confidence … There's something very empowering about them."
The musical is set to open in December at West London’s Piccadilly Theater.
