More than 80 million Americans believe UFOs exist. That’s according to a new survey from National Geographic. NBC’s Today has the details.

“A new survey by National Geographic channel finds 36% of Americans believe UFOs exist, and 79 percent think the federal government is hiding something about UFOs... I know it’s a bizarre study.”

A reporter for  ABC’s Good Morning America says this survey might explain why UFO sightings are on the rise.

“And the truth is out there. Just this month alone, a rash of sightings across the country. Strange light formations over Colorado Springs, Ft. Myers, Florida, and Salt Lake City, Utah.”

Another critical finding – Nearly 65 percent of those polled think President Obama is better suited than Mitt Romney to counter an alien invasion. On Live With Kelly — NFL broadcaster Michael Strahan and Kelly Ripa decided this would be a perfect topic for a movie.

“President Barack Obama would handle the aliens. Because he's — Michael: he's smooth. Kelly: He would be very smooth at the press conference. Aliens are here. We’re gonna get them.”

But is the government really keeping ET under wraps? MSNBC explains —  last November,  a public petition was submitted to the White House asking for more information on alien life. Here’s how the White House responded:

“The U.S. government has no evidence that life exists outside our planet... In addition, there is no credible information to suggest any evidence is being hidden from the publics eye.”

Despite government claims, a team of investigators is now looking to uncover the truth about UFOs in National Geographic’s newest series “Chasing UFO’s.” It will premiere on Friday.
