AIRLINE Air New Zealand pay tribute to the forthcoming big screen adaptation of The Hobbit - with an in-flight safety video inspired by it.

The clip sees the carrier describe itself as "The Airline of Middle-earth" and features creatures from author J.R.R. Tolkein's fantasy world including goblins and dwarves.

While the plane's pilot is the spitting image of heroic wizard Gandalf, the airline stewards resemble elves.

As they explain the rules on using electronic devices, their passengers user their claws to turn off their laptops and iPads before tucking them away.

The Hobbit director Peter Jackson also puts in an appearance as a passenger who loses his magic ring, while Tolkien's great-grandsons Mike and Royd Tolkien are also included.

Royd, who plays a man with enormous hairy hobbit feet, said: "They've done a great job of capturing the essence of The Hobbit films and it was a privilege to be invited to participate."

The Hobbit is set for a UK release on December 14, and will be the first part of a trilogy.
