Bafta news: John Hurt is to receive the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award at the film ceremony next month

JOHN Hurt is to receive the Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award at the Baftas next month.

The A Man For All Seasons star - whose career has spanned six decades - will join the likes of the Harry Potter franchise and Joe Dunton in picking up the accolade.

Commenting on the award, which he will be given at the event on February 12, John,72, said: "I know that film means a great deal to me but I had no idea that I meant so much to film. I feel very honoured."

Tim Corrie, chairman of Bafta, added John was a deserving winner because he has an "extraordinary screen presence".

He said: "John Hurt is an actor it is both exciting and fascinating to watch. He has extraordinary screen presence and brings utter conviction to every role he undertakes.

"He is one of a kind, an iconic figure, and Bafta is delighted to take this opportunity to honour his outstanding contribution to cinema."

Stephen Fry will present the awards.
