Alex Zane's movie tips for 2012

CHRISTOPHER Nolan's final outing as Batman director promises to be a stunning finale to his trilogy.

Tom Hardy takes on villain duties as super-strong, super-smart terrorist Bane.

Set in Gotham City eight years after the previous film, Anne Hathaway appears as Catwoman and for the first time we'll see Christian Bale's Batman take to the streets in broad daylight for some serious fight scenes.

Rumours abound that we'll also be getting a Batwing-like flying vehicle.

And it has also been said that Liam Neeson will reprise his role of Ra's Al Ghul.

THE film that has gobbled up screen-time in everything from Iron Man 2 to Thor as Marvel set about sowing the back-story for this monumental mash-up of its major heroes finally arrives.

Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), along with Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, battle against Loki (Tom Hiddleston) as he attacks Earth.

Expect superhero squabbles and stunning set pieces.

AFTER a brief stay in development hell, it's the man who brought Middle-earth to the screen the first time round, Peter Jackson, behind the camera again.

Martin Freeman takes the lead as Bilbo Baggins, who heads off to retrieve treasure from the dragon Smaug.

A few familiar faces make a return, including Ian McKellen as Gandalf. The second part is out in 2013.

RIDLEY Scott's return to the Alien universe is shrouded in secrecy.

What it is probably right to assume though is that this prequel of sorts will go some way to explaining the identity of the giant "space jockey" seen in the original Alien.

Starring Michael Fassbender, Rafe Spall and Noomi Rapace, it's also the director's first foray into 3D film-making.

AFTER the much criticised but not nearly as bad as people said 1995 version, 2000 AD's comic book anti-hero Judge Dredd gets a reboot. Sly Stallone is out and Karl Urban is stepping into his boots.

A few recent rumours about problems on set hopefully don't mean that the quality of what has been promised as a much darker movie than its predecessor has been affected.

And this time, the helmet stays on.

FIVE years after Sam Raimi's disappointing Spider-Man 3 ended his and Tobey Maguire's reign over Marvel's much-loved superhero, the series is getting a restart.

Step forward Brits Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Rhys Ifans as villain The Lizard.

Director Marc Webb is behind the camera and if ever there was a movie that could impress with its 3D, it's this.

DIE Hard 4.0 director Len Wiseman is in charge on this remake of the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic.

Stepping into the Austrian Oak's sizeable shoes is Colin Farrell as Doug, the man whose dreams turn out to be memories, leading to a fight for survival.

With the excellent Bryan Cranston as villain Cohaagen, the biggest change from the 1990 original is that they won't be going to Mars.

THE movie touted as the successor to Twilight's tween throne it too is based on a hugely successful series of books sounds very similar to Japanese film Battle Royale.

A group of children are provided with weapons and forced to fight it out with each other until only one remains.

X-Men: First Class star Jennifer Lawrence takes the lead. While the subject sounds dark, this will be more of a PG kind of dark.

AFTER delays caused by the bankruptcy of MGM, Daniel Craig returns as 007.

The 23rd outing for Bond sounds like it will have an expanded role for Judi Dench's M as the spy's loyalty to her is tested when MI6 comes under attack.

American Beauty director Sam Mendes is calling the shots in what will be his first proper action movie and Javier Bardem takes on villain duties. Also on board is Ralph Fiennes in an as-yet undisclosed role.

KERMIT, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and the rest of the gang return to cinemas after a 13-year hiatus.

In reality, though, it was The Muppet Christmas Carol, way back in 1992, that was their last truly great movie.

Here, Jason Segal on starring and writing duties brings the heroes back to their original stomping ground of The Muppet Theatre as they try to raise ten million dollars to stop it falling into the hands of Chris Cooper's rich businessman.

AFTER Bruno failed to match the hilarity and box-office success of Borat, Sacha Baron Cohen finally ran out of the characters from his TV shows.

In this comedy he is a dictator of a fictional Arab country though the trailer ties the story in with recent events in Libya attempting to "ensure that democracy never comes to the country he so lovingly oppressed". Sir Ben Kingsley and Anna Faris co-star.

NEVER the easiest superhero to bring to the big screen, 2007's film failed to capture the darkness and horror of the original comics.

So step forward directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the visual dynamos behind the Crank films.

Nicolas Cage reprises his lead role and if the trailer for this reboot is anything to go by, expect mind-blowing action and a wicked sense of humour flaming urine anyone?
