The Museum of Modern Art in New York — or MoMA — is adding a video-games exhibit. WABC explains.
“PacMan, Tetris, Simcity. … These are just some of the 14 games that will go on display in March. … Curators are still working out all the details. Eventually, MoMA plans to have 40 games as part of its architecture and design collection.”
According to GameSpot, each video game was chosen based on certain criteria, including overall aesthetics and the behavior they elicit from the players. The senior curator says...
“The games are selected as outstanding examples of interaction design--a field that MoMA has already explored and collected extensively, and one of the most important and oft-discussed expressions of contemporary design creativity."
A writer for Slate says this classification takes video game exhibition to the next level.
“By including the games in its Architecture and Design collection... the MoMA acquisition places the ‘art’ of video games in their architecture—that is, in the code crafted by designers and programmers.”
A writer for Complex Gaming says the battle to certify these games as art has been a long-running one. But for those on the video-game-creation side, this can be seen as a victory.
“When all is said and done, the greatest implication this may have is that—in the same way Hollywood studios started building out "independent" production houses branches to make ostensibly unconventional fare to add to their awards piles—the video game industry will begin to covet this kind of attention, and add more resources to it.”
The exhibition will go on display in March 2013. The museum hopes to eventually acquire games like Snake, Super Mario Bros. and The Legend Of Zelda.
