Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, and Carrie Underwood starring in a TV remake of the Sound of Music. ABC reports:

“The hills are alive with the sound of Carrie Underwood. The country singer will play Maria von Trapp in the TV broadcast of the Sound of Music.”

With plans to air the live three hour show next year, it will be based off the original broadway musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein. NBC Executive Robert Greenblatt told People.com:

“...we couldn’t be happier to have the gifted Carrie Underwood take up the mantle of the great Maria von Trapp. She was an iconic woman who will now be played by an iconic artist.”

Although this will be Underwood’s first time playing the famous nanny, this isn’t her first time performing some of the iconic music. She showed off her musical chops performing the movie’s namesake in the 2007 CBS special, “Movies Rock.”

According to the New York Daily News, Underwood is only the most recent "American Idol" alum to end up in a musical.

"On Broadway, Fantasia has starred in "The Color Purple," Jordin Sparks in "In the Heights," Clay Aiken in "Spamalot" and Taylor Hicks in "Grease."”
