Geena Davis, 56, ditches casual skirt and shirt to channel Grace Kelly in shimmering dress

Each year, Prince Albert of Monaco presides over the Princess Grace Awards in honour of his late, luminous mother - Grace Kelly - and the great causes she supported in her short life.

This year the annual event took place at Manhattan's ritzy Cipriani, and many of the female attendees took care to pay homage to the screen legend in their glamorous choice of attire.

But it was Geena Davis who took the gold... quite literally.

The 56-year-old was stunning in a gorgeous gold evening gown, that captured the old school Hollywood glamour personified by Prince Albert's mother and still aped by women in all walks of life today.

Her transformation was all the more impressive considering the fact that the Thelma and Louise star wasn't sitting in a salon all day, but rather dashing around town taking meetings.

Davis wore an office friendly combination of white shirt and black pencil skirt, pepped up with an orange bag, for her daytime chores.

But later, as she joined Prince Albert and Princess Charlene... Geena was going for gold.

But she didn't overdo it, and wisely decided to let the antique pewter frock do most of the talking.

Davis, who is married to plastic surgeon Reza Jarrahy, 41, wore her auburn hair loosely set, with classic cut earrings and minimal make up.

She was also married her co-star in The Fly, Jeff Goldblum, from 1987 to 1990... they remain good friends.

The same can't be said of director Renny Harlin, her third husband and the man she divorced for infidelity but thankfully, after meeting Reza lasting happiness was hers... they have three children.

Prince Albert of Monaco and Princess Charlene have arrived in New York for the annual Princess Grace Awards, which will take place tonight.

The couple were spotted today as they left a pre-event lunch at the upscale French restaurant,  Daniel, in the Upper East Side, where tasting menus start from $ 195.

Despite jetting straight to Manhattan following a four-day tour of Poland, both looked decidedly fresh, and Charlene, who opted for a stunning crimson ensemble, stopped to smile for photographers as she exited the venue.

Named after the 54-year-old Prince's mother, Oscar-winning actress Grace Kelly, this evening's gala will raise funds for the U.S.-based Princess Grace Foundation, which recognises emerging talent in theater, dance, and film.

The Prince acts as vice chairman for the organisation.

Last year's event honored the British actress Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway, presented her with  the Prince Rainier III award.

Last week the royals made a poignant visit to the memorial of the former Nazi German death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau and laid flowers at its Execution Wall.

The couple walked on Friday through the Arbeit Macht Frei (Work Makes you Free) gate into the Auschwitz camp and visited its crematorium and red-brick barracks that house inmates' belongings and hair. They wrote in the visitors' book that the memory of the atrocities will never be extinguished.

Prince Albert also visited the wooden barracks and memorial at nearby Birkenau, where Jews were brought to their death at the gas chamber or forced into hard work.

Some 1.5 million people, mostly Jews, were killed at the camp between 1940 and 1945.

The royals also visited Warsaw and Krakow on their four-day Polish visit.
Prince Albert, son of Rainer III and Grace Kelly, is said to be one ne of the wealthiest royals in the world with a fortune estimated at $ 1bn (£624m).

He married Charlene, then Wittstock, in a ceremony last year.
